San Diego Head Start Program
San Diego Head Start is a comprehensive child development program that serves children from the time they are born until age five. It offers child-focused programs for kids and their families. The goal is to increase the school preparation and readiness of young children in low-income families.
The Head Start Program is sponsored by The Administration for Children and Families (ACF). Grants are awarded by the ACF Regional Offices and given directly to local public agencies, private organizations, and school districts for the purpose of funding Head Start Programs in the San Diego community.
Head Start has a long tradition of delivering all-inclusive and high quality services designed to promote healthy development and education in low-income children. It provides a variety of individualized services in the areas of education and early childhood development; physical and mental health; nutrition; and parent involvement. The entire range of Head Start services is suitable to each child as well as their family's ethnic and cultural background and experience.
Head Start gives children a sense of belonging. It offers support services and an opportunity to get involved in activities that help the entire family. Parents can take part in education classes on topics such as: child rearing, job training and health and nutrition, as well as learn about free resources in their community. Head Start also offers assistance to parents interested in obtaining a high school Diploma or (GED).
